Watermelon Skin Dice and Rice Porridge

Introduction:

When I saw this rice porridge recipe (I am going to introduce it to you in today’s post below.) in a cookbook at the local bookstore the other day, I wondered why people are turning back to what people ate because of lack of money.

Watermelon skin is this kind of things in the good old days. As I recall, we grew water melons in our own field which was contracted to us by the Chinese government. They were intended for sale. So my parents only brought some unattractive ones back home for us kids. After the meat was eaten, my mother would wash the skin pieces clean and drop them into the pickle-brewing crock. They tasted alright when they are done.

However, that was something that happened long time ago. Nobody would eat watermelon skin. At least, I thought so. But this rice porridge recipe has changed my perspective.

This is only one example. Looking around the supermarkets, I have found some vegetables that even were thrown away in the old days. Those things are what I would rather not try. LOL.

Ingredients:

Polished round-grained rice: 100 g

Watermelon skin: 50 g

Seasonings:

Salt: 2 g

Cool water: 1000 ml

Preparation Work:

1. Rinse the rice clean, cover it in water for half an hour and strain it out;

2. Remove the hard outer skin and the watermelon meat leftover;

2. Wash clean;

3. Finely dice the watermelon skin;

4. Salt the dices for a few moments.

Cooking Steps:

1. Pour the cool water into the pot;

2. Put the watermelon skin dice and rice into the pot;

3. Boil it on high heat;

4. Turn to low heat when the pot is boiling;

5. Season it with salt after approximately 45 minutes at last.

Cooking Tips:

Here’s an effective Chinese folk remedy where watermelon skin is used to anemogenous toothache or stomatitis:

1) Sun the water melon skin until it dries;

2) Grind it together with some borneol;

3) Blend the powder with some honey and apply it onto the aching tooth or the topical location where the stomatitis is.
